#Harvest15 a done deal…

22 Oct 2015 British

Well it’s been an interesting #Harvest15 with a fair amount of overcast days, but not too much rain!  Our final crop to be harvested which is happening today is the maize (or sweet corn).  We only have a few fields planted with this crop which stands at a hefty 5 ft high.  Maize is used primarily for animal feed as the variety we grow would be too tough for human consumption.  Because of its size, we cannot harvest maize with our own combine, so instead we use contractors who cut the maize with a beast of a machine known as a Rotary Harvester.  For us, the harvest only takes a day as it’s fast and furious work.  The crop is usually cut nearer the beginning of October so this year we are certainly running a little late, but then that’s farming for you – unpredictable – a bit like the English weather…
